The Cygnus room teaches the students a new sign every week during morning circle. The signs taught are related to things we are learning about in the room. We have done some classroom rules such as sit and stand up, and have done common reinforcers such as cookies and chocolate. At the end of the day, the staff quizzes the students on the previously learned signed. The students do a very good job remembering the old signs.
Each student gets a job every week for morning circle. One student tells us the date, another tells us the days of the week, one tells the weather, one tells the season, someone greets the class, and one demonstrates the sign of the week to the rest of the class. The students are learning to raise their hand and wait their turn.
Every day the Cygnus room does a special activity. This rotates between social studies and science topics. The topics follow a
theme. For example the week of Halloween we did a Halloween theme. Each day the students watch a video or read a book related to a topic. They then complete a project dealing with the book or video they read.
