The students in the Libra classroom are really enjoying our new school building! We love playing with a parachute in the gym, playing on our two playgrounds, and working on assembly tasks in the vocational classroom. We are also very excited about the library, where we can borrow movies and books, and the Independent Living Skills Apartment, where we are practicing skills like making the bed, preparing snacks and cleaning the restroom.
In addition to learning functional math and reading and working on speech, handwriting and other occupational tasks; once a month we have lunch with two other classrooms. This has provided many opportunities to interact with other students and staff in a casual atmosphere. We also have fun making items for the lunch. So far, we have had a Labor Day picnic and have planned a Italian Feast and a pizza party.
One of our students is working in the community on a daily basis. He works at the Toledo Zoo, Goodwill, and the park. We have a few other students who are beginning their work experiences with short shifts at Rudy’s Hot Dog this fall. We are also helping take care of the recycling at the school and everyday a student takes the attendance to the office. We will be going out to lunch at either Carmel’s or Rudy’s Hot Dog once a week as well.
The Libra class is a very active bunch. We can always use reinforcing items such as pop, juice, chips, junior mints, gummy bears, reeses cups, tootsie rolls and Cheetos. We can also use simple baking mixes for our class cooking time.
