In the Orion classroom, the students are working hard on communication skills. They use a variety of approaches that include verbal, sign and Picture Exchange Communication (PECS). Students also work on academics and self-help skills to encourage independence. With a high teacher to student ratio, the programming is individualized and often completed in a one on one setting. Students learn and have fun with many hands-on activities through a multi-sensory approach.
On Fridays, the classroom has “Friday Fun Day”. This is where the classroom focuses more on group activities that include lessons in Science, Social Studies and Group Reading. Other special activities can include the use of the kitchen for cooking, as well the library, assembly room, gym and mock apartment.
For holidays and birthdays the Orion classroom goes all out. Party celebrations include decorations, crafts and of course, food. Thanksgiving is most popular party; a feast with all the trimmings.
